Inclement severe weather in Western Kansas gave way to inclement winter weather.

Severe storms with damaging wind, and a weak tornado, caused damage Sunday in areas of western Kansas including Garden City. The tornado is rated an EF-One. Sunday’s tornado damaged fewer than 10 buildings, and no injuries were reported. The tornado was the first to impact Garden City since 1995. There were no reports of injuries.

By Monday afternoon snow falling across Western Kansas was causing hazardous driving conditions. Travel was impacted by a blizzard in northwestern Kansas. The Kansas Department of Transportation was forced to close westbound I-70 between Hays and the Colorado border and eastbound I-70 between WaKeeney and the Colorado border due to snowy and icy conditions and multiple vehicles blocking the roadway.

Officials were reminding that driving around road closure gates or barricades is illegal, and citations may be given. Avoid using secondary routes to go around the closure; travel is hazardous.

The road was back open by late in the evening.

The winter weather will be short lived, with temperatures steadily rising the rest of the week.
