The Salina Symphony will celebrate a historic season, its 60th. The Salina Symphony’s 60th Anniversary “Diamond Jubilee” season includes a full schedule of a wide range of shows.
The Symphony will open the season Oct. 4 with Tchaikovsky’s powerfully dramatic Symphony No. 4 and a premiere performance for two cellos and orchestra composed by award-winning Japanese composer, Miho Hazama. The piece will be performed by Derek and Adele Stein, children of Symphony founder and long-time conductor, Eric Stein.
On Nov. 8 its “Irving Berlin – From Rags to Ritzes.” Enjoy all of your Irving Berlin favorites, including Blue Skies, Cheek to Cheek, How Deep is the Ocean, Puttin’ on the Ritz, Steppin’ Out with my Baby and more.
The ever-popular Christmas Festival will be performed Dec. 12 and 13. Celebrate the season with festive song and dance from the Symphony, Center for Theatre Arts Dancers, Salina Chorale, KWU Chorale and Salina Youth Choir.
Two international virtuosos will return to the Stiefel stage Jan. 31. Tatiana Tessman will perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Rebecca Copley will perform selections from Puccini’s Tosca and Turandot.
The season will conclude May 1 with a memorable program featuring classical favorites ranging from Strauss to Star Wars. The concert will feature a 200 member adult, college and high school combined choir. It will be a celebratory finish to this historic season.
ENCORE PERFORMANCES
Encore performances will include the Wichita Grand Opera’s “A Royal Enchanted Evening” at the Stiefel Theatre on Aug. 7. The program will consist of highlights from WGO’s 2015 “Season of Royalty,” combining the greatest musical moments of WGO’s season in a single evening. Maestro Ken Hakoda will lead WGO’s soloists and chorus, along with the Salina Symphony pit orchestra.
Cirque de la Symphonie will return to Salina March 5. This electrifying performance will combine the best in symphonic music with the excitement of aerial and acrobatic artistry. Accomplished performers from across the globe will bring the magic of Cirque to the Stiefel Theatre for an unforgettable evening!
The Symphony will present Symphony at Sunset on June 4, an outdoor performance held on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. The annual D-Day Commemoration Concert will feature patriotic favorites as well as popular classics.
