A convicted mail thief has been sentenced to federal prison after trying to cash a fraudulent check at a Kansas bank and leading police on a chase.

The Kansas City Star reports that 64-year-old Ronald L. Hines has been sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison without parole.

Prosecutors said in a statement that Hines, also known as Hinds, had prior federal convictions for stealing mail. The latest sentence must be served consecutively to a two-year sentence Hines received upon the revocation of a supervised release. The court also ordered Hines to pay $8,504 in restitution.

Hines admitted to stealing outgoing mail from rural mailboxes in Missouri and Kansas last summer. He used the stolen mail to write more than $8,000 of fraudulent checks.
