A piece of Hollywood history sold at auction for a big price.
The blue-and-white dress Judy Garland wore as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” sold Monday for $1.56 million in New York. Bonhams Auctions had that piece along with nearly 400 others up for sale.
The dress went to a phone bidder and crushed pre-sale estimates. It’s one of just two complete Dorothy costumes on the planet.
Among the other items at the auction was a suit worn by Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” which fetched $425,000. A “golden ticket” prop from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” sold for $35,000.
