One person was killed Thursday when a vehicle they were driving was hit by a car fleeing a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol the two-vehicle fatality crash happened in Topeka after a brief KHP pursuit. The crash occurred at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Gage Boulevard, which is south of I-70.
At 12:00 p.m. Thursday, a KHP trooper attempted a traffic stop on Gage Boulevard at I-70 on a Chevrolet Impala after observing a traffic violation.
At 12:01 p.m., the driver of the Chevrolet Impala failed to stop, and after a brief pursuit, struck a gray Toyota passenger car traveling westbound on 6th Avenue at the Intersection with Gage Boulevard. A passenger in the gray vehicle was killed, and the driver was transported to a Topeka hospital in critical condition.
There were three occupants in the suspect’s vehicle, the driver and a baby in the back seat were taken to a local hospital to be checked out. A passenger in the suspect vehicle was not injured.
The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team responded to complete a full reconstruction of the crash.
Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor was notified of the incident and responded to the scene.
