Virgil Francis Versch, 89, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 1:27 p.m., Friday, August 31st, peacefully, at Cedars House 803.
Virgil was born in Herndon, Kansas on December 2, 1928, a son of Agnes Veronica (Schmitt) and Paul John Versch.
Virgil attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Herndon, Kansas and attended Oberlin High School, Oberlin, Kansas.
Virgil was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church McPherson, where he was a member of Legion of Mary, Knights of Columbus, Eucharistic Minister of the church and he was a part of a group that counted weekly offertory after mass every Sunday.
He served in the U.S. Army as a Cpl during the Korean War honorably in Anchorage, Alaska.
Virgil worked as a carpenter and in general maintenance at Bryan Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska while attending Southeast Community Technical College studying welding and boiler operations.
Virgil was a life member of the American Legion Post 24, McPherson, Kansas. He delivered meals for the McPherson Senior Center to shut ins for over 22 years. Virgil enjoyed woodworking, gardening, spending time with his family and collected antiques.
On August 18, 1952, Virgil Francis Versch was united in marriage to Norma Dirks, Atwood, Kansas. They were blessed with two children, Janet and James.
Virgil F. Versch was united in marriage to Frances Anderson on May 18, 1996 at St. Joseph’s Church, McPherson, Kansas. .
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 22 years, Frances Versch, of the home, McPherson; his children, James “Jim” Versch and wife Judy, of Marion, Kansas and Janet Saylor and husband Steve, of Hutchinson, Kansas; his siblings, Francis Versch, of Loveland, Colorado, Dennis Versch and wife Eddie Mae, of Council Grove, Kansas, Velma Hunter, of Northglen, Colorado, Shirley Haynes, of McMinnville,Oregon, and Dorothy Hill and husband Ron, of Greeley, Colorado; his step children, Brenda Peters and husband Tom, of McPherson, Kansas, Charles “Chuck” Anderson and wife Nancy, of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Susan Slechta and husband Danny, of McPherson, Kansas; his 8 grandchildren, Jesse Versch (Amber), Sarah Bauer (Jesse), Joel Versch(Jill), Emalee Jorgensen (Aaron) and Jordan Versch; Andrew Saylor, Patrick Saylor and Elizabeth Saylor; his 15 great-grandchildren; his 7 step-grandchildren; his 11 great-step-grandchildren;
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, infant brother, Eugene Versch, Paul Versch Jr., and Louise Penn-Seggerman.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 with Fr. Ben Shockey officiating.
Final resting place will be the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
