Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream is still alive and well in Central Kansas. Salinans gathered over the weekend to celebrate the civil rights pioneer’s life and legacy.

A community potluck was held Saturday evening at this year’s host, Sunrise Presbyterian Church.

Sunday afternoon King’s dream was kept alive through words and song and a community-wide service and celebration. Sunday’s events included:

• Welcome by Pastor Martha Murchison
• St. John’s Military School Cadets flag ceremony / presentation
• Presentations from individuals, churches, and Salina / Saline County first responders
• Cultural Crawl exhibit which was recently at the Salina Art Center
• Music from Salina Youth Choir, Sunrise Presbyterian Chancel Choir, and NAACP Matriarch Mrs. Cora Williams

The Sunday event ended with the entire congregation linking arms and singing “We Shall Overcome.”

The Sunday afternoon celebration was the marquee event of a week of activities in Salina dedicated to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Monday, a community-wide youth service will be held at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church beginning at 12 noon.
