The Sacred Heart and Hutch-Trinity boys teams played an instant classic on Friday night in Hutchinson.

Unfortunately for the Knights, they’d lose for the second-straight game, 75-71 in 2OT.

The Knights trailed 32-30 at halftime when Tate Herrenbruck sparked Sacred Heart in the third quarter with multiple made 3-pointers. Herrenbruck put the Knights up 47-42 going in to the final quarter.

Sacred Heart led 55-45 with less than four minutes left and appeared to be ready to pull away when when the Celtics had one last run to regain the lead. The Celtics would go on a 14-2 run over the final four minutes to lead 59-57 with 4.4 seconds to go.

Sacred Heart then ran a full length of the floor in-bounds play to perfection. Skidmore ran the baseline then threw a “baseball” pass up the floor to mid-court to Trace Leners. Leners swung it off to Herrenbruck who then tipped it to Luis Mendez right underneath the basket to tie the game with less than one second to go in regulation.

The Knights and Celtics went on to overtime. In the first period, the Knights led 66-61 with less than a minute left, however a quick 5-0 Trinity run sent the game in to a second overtime period tied at 66-66.

The second OT period belonged to the Celtics as they would knockdown FTs to pull away for a huge win.

Hutch-Trinity (8-3) was led by Lucas Hammeke’s 21 points. Jack Neal scored 16 points, and Kaleb Hammeke finished 15 points.

Sacred Heart (9-4) was paced by Herrenbruck who scored a career-high 24 points with seven 3-point makes. Skidmore scored 17 points, while Mark Prendergast added in 13.

Hutch-Trinity 51, SACRED HEART GIRLS 30

Sacred Heart’s girls struggled on Friday night at Hutchinson.

The Trinity Celtics got up early and never trailed. They led 15-7 after one and 30-15 at halftime.

The Knights would cut the lead to 10 points with a little more than five minutes to go, but Trinity ended the game on an 11-1 run to sink the Knights.

Hutch-Trinity (6-6) was led by Olivia Shank with 15 points, with both Hayley Hughes and Meg Friday scoring 10 points.

Sacred Heart (8-5) was led by Ally Cochran with nine points.

Sacred Heart plays at Southeast of Saline on Tuesday night in a big rivalry game. Live coverage can be heard on FM 104.9.
