It was twice as nice to be a Cougar Tuesday night. Both the Salina South Boys and Girls basketball teams won, and both teams did it in overtime.

In the girl’s game South did a nice job of handling the pressure defense of Hays, at times forcing the Lady Indians out of it and into a more half-court style game.

South trailed at the end of the first quarter 16 – 14, but was able to tie the game at 25 at the half. The Cougars trailed by three, 36 – 33 headed into the fourth quarter. South trailed by as many as 9 before a late flurry tied the score. Hays had a chance to win the game in the final seconds but couldn’t get a shot to fall against an inspired South defense. At the end of regulation the score was tied at 44.

South dominated the overtime and won 54 – 49.

Senior Camdyn Schreiber led South in scoring, pouring in 17 points. Freshman Kylie Arnold also had a big game, frustrating Hays with her defensive pressure and on offense hitting a key 3-pointer and some timely free throws down the stretch. Victoria Maxton came up big off the bench, getting some key rebounds and some timely shots as well as scoring 9 points. Gretchen Cox also played tough in the paint while chipping in a dozen points.

Savannah Schneider had 14 points to lead Hays.

South now climbs to 4 – 8 on the season while Hays falls to 8 – 4.

The boys game also went to overtime. South played sluggish for much of the game and trailed at the end of each of the first three quarters. The Cougars trailed by as many as 15 points in the 4th quarter, 46 – 31, before they came roaring back. Powered by a 19 – 1 run South battled back. The Cougars had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but could not get a last second shot to fall.

South scored first in overtime, then held on to win 64 – 62.

Colin Schreiber had a career game for South, scoring a career-high 19 points and pulling down some key rebounds. A.J. Johnson scored 15 and Elex Banks had 14. Devon Junghans had 11, including a key 3-pointer late in the game and some timely free throws as well.

Tradgon McCrae had 34 points to lead Hays,

South climbs to 6-7 while Hays falls to 6-6.

Both South teams travel to Derby on Friday.
