Derby Dismantles South

The Salina South boy’s basketball team saw its three game winning streak come to an end on Friday night, as the Cougars couldn’t complete their second comeback in-a-row from double-digits in a 66-61 loss at Derby.

South had just blitzed the Panthers last week, winning by 14 at home. The Cougars this time fell behind early to an energized Derby team looking to prove a point.

South trailed 16-13 after one and 31-26 at halftime. The Cougars will be kicking themselves for the way they opened up the third quarter though, as Derby was able to stretch its lead to 12 at multiple points behind the scoring of Tre Washington and Clayton Hood who both dominated the period offensively. After the third quarter blitz, Derby led 48-40 going in to the final quarter.

Elex Banks had kept the Cougars from falling too far behind all night, when his teammates began to step up. Josh Jordan and A.J. Johnson both began to heat up and South quickly made a game of it early on in the 4th.

South had trimmed the lead to just two points with a couple of minutes to go–shades of their 15-point come-from-behind win over Hays on Tuesday–however, the Cougars this time were never able to get over the hump. South had two or three looks to either tie the game or take the lead in the closing minutes but were never able to hit the shot.

Derby (4-10, 2-5 AVCTL-I) avenged a loss at Salina last week where the Cougars largest lead was once 29 points. Hood led the way with 23 points and Washington scored 15–all in the second half.

Salina South (6-8, 2-5 AVCTL-I) never led after the first quarter. Banks dominated Derby inside with 15 points. Both Johnson and Devon Junghans tallied in 11 points, each.

The Cougars next travel to Haysville-Campus on Tuesday.

Derby 57, SALINA SOUTH GIRLS 17

The Cougar girl’s team was no match for the top-ranked team in 6A on Friday night at Derby High School.

South would get a taste of both future Division-I talents Kennedy Brown and Tor’e Alford as the duo would dominate the game.

The Cougars trailed 19-4 after one, 36-8 at halftime and 48-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Derby (13-0, 6-0 AVCTL-I) never trailed. The Panthers were lead by both Brown and Alford who scored 18 and 13 points, each.

Salina South (4-10, 1-5 AVCTL-I) struggled with the defensive pressure of Derby all night. The Cougars were led by Victoria Maxton who finished six points.

Salina South will play at Haysville-Campus on Tuesday. Coverage will be heard on Y-93.7.
