Evan G. Engle, age 103, passed away from this life on Thursday, June 20, 2019. Evan was born one of twin boys on April 2, 1916 on the family farm near Hope, KS. He attended the Rosebank Country School and graduated from Hope High School.
He worked for Munkries John Deere Co. in Herington, KS as a mechanic for many years. He also had a talent for fixing hay balers and during hay baling season he was in high demand. He was also a substitute rural mail carrier for several years. He loved to play baseball and other sports and enjoyed jogging, and he would jog rain or shine, sleet or snow along with his faithful dog Whizzie.
On May 27, 1939 he was united in marriage to Winifred Kloepfer at Hope, KS. They made their home in the Hope area where he was a member of the Rosebank Brethren in Christ Church where he sang in the church choir, even though he couldn’t carry a tune, and taught Sunday School there for many years. He also attended Abilene Brethren in Christ Church. His knowledge of the Bible was outstanding and was a faithful follower of Christ and he shared his passion with all who knew him.
He is survived by: five children Ruth Ann Mounkes of Lyndon, KS, Glenda Tompkins of Salina, KS, Max Engle of Oswego, KS, Cathy Schaben of Lincoln, NE and Mike Engle of Abilene; 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and in October 2018 a great great granddaughter was born which gave the family 5 generations.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Winifred; three daughters LaDonna Zerbe, Carmen Gilmore, and Corinne Dennis; a grandson Robert Hawkes who passed away at the tender age of 3 months; his parents, Walter and Lillian Engle; a sister Lucille who died in infancy, a brother Leland Engle, a sister Lucille who died in infancy, a brother Leland who died after contacting tetanus as a young boy and his twin brother, Ivan.
Although his earthly life has ended, his memory will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched with his sweet gentle spirit.
Services for Evan will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Abilene Brethren in Christ Church 1005 N. Buckeye Ave, Abilene, KS 67410 followed by interment at Rosebank Cemetery near Hope. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
