Tom Highsmith passed away on January 30, 2020 at the age of 71 after a 5-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Tom is survived by his beautiful wife of 50 years, Jody Highsmith, who never left his side. Adoring father of Tommy Highsmith (Nikkie Kerwin) and Mike Highsmith (Marideth). Devoted “Bopsy” (grandpa) of Samantha Highsmith, Cassie Springer, Noah Highsmith, Grace Kerwin, Wes Kinnard, Nik Highsmith, Layna Kinnard, Chloe Highsmith, and his Great Grandson, Reid Browning.
Also survived by his sisters, Mona Higginbotham (Andy), Vicki Beal, Karen Lowe, and his brother Randy Highsmith (Jonelle)
Preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Phyllis Highsmith, his parents-in-law, Joe and Bessie Engstrom, and sister, Barbara Baker.
Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He married his “sweetheart, Jody Engstrom on June 28, 1969.
Tom retired from the Salina Police Department as Lieutenant in 1989. After retirement, he worked as Personnel Director at Presbyterian Manor and until his death at Suburban Appliance.
Besides being the best storyteller, Tom enjoyed garage sales, pawn shops, and his truck. Spending time with his grandchildren especially during Sunday Night dinners, and playing cars with his great grandson, were his greatest joys.
Service will be on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, 2020 at 1:30 pm at Immanual Lutheran Church on 255 South 7th. Memorial contributions may be made to the SPD Excellence Fund and left in care of Salina Police Department, 255 N 10th Street, Salina KS 67401.
