Curtis W. Syring, 91, of Herington, died Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Curtis was born at home September 14, 1930 at Rock Creek in Wabunsee County, Kansas, to Herman W. Syring and Alta V. (Kahle) Syring. He grew up in Alta Vista, Kansas. He loved learning and wholeheartedly participated in all aspects of education during his school years. He enjoyed and excelled in all school sports. After graduating from Alta Vista High School in 1948, Curtis enlisted in the United States Navy where he received education as an electrician. He was called back into active duty in 1952. During the Korean War, serving as Electrician’s Mate on board an LSM Navy ship. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December of 1953.

Over the next few years Curtis worked in various areas of electric and automotive repair, before going to work for the Production Credit Association in Council Grove, Kansas. He was promoted to Manager of Production Credit in Salina, Kansas in 1966. He continued his career in the agricultural loan division of Sunflower Bank as an Assistant Vice President in Salina and Russell until his retirement. He continued to do agricultural loan inspections for the bank up until two years ago.

Curtis’ father was a fine carpenter and taught him those skills from an early age. Curtis blessed his family and friends with many wood creations he fashioned in his wood shop. Along with his electrical knowledge, he also possessed a self-taught mechanical mind that could figure out how to fix just about anything. He always wanted to stay active and useful.

Curtis greatly enjoyed and participated in sports his entire life. He played baseball for community teams as a young man. He was a football and basketball official for many years. His greatest enjoyment was found on the golf course. He played golf as often as he possibly could for well over 50 years, playing his last round in November of 2019 when his health began to fail.

In 1952 he married Betty Pykiet from Council Grove. To that marriage were born his two children, Randy and Leanne. After that marriage ended, he and Peggy Holmes were united in marriage until Peggy passed away in 1998. Curtis was introduced to Audrey Lorenz who became his dearly beloved and constant companion until Audrey’s death in 2018.

Curtis is survived by his two children, Randy (Susie) of Salina, and Leanne Williams (Rich) of Council Grove; and a sister, Virginia Fisher of Council Grove. He was blessed with five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, as well as a nephew and three nieces.

The body was cremated. There will be a celebration of Curtis’s life at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 17, 2022 at the Community Christian Church, 18 McCardell St, in Council Grove, Kansas, with Reverend Richard Williams officiating.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the First Tee Program in Salina, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
