Dorothy Marie (Mattison) Long

SALINA – Dorothy Marie (Mattison) Long, (Granny), 90, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022. Dorothy was born on January 31, 1932, in New Cambria, Kansas, the daughter of Earl Sr. and Eunice (Beck) Mattison. Dorothy was a homemaker raising four children, and later worked in various jobs at St. John’s Military School starting in 1963 until retiring in 1993. Dorothy was married to Robert Dean Long Sr for 61 years until Dean’s passing in April 2012. Dorothy was active in the Hawthorne Elementary School Parent/Teachers Association ultimately serving as President of the PTA. She was a Scouting leader in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for her children, serving in many roles, including Den Mother and Troop Leader. For over 30 years, Dean and Dorothy organized annual family campouts for the Long Campin’ Cuzzins and the Big “M” Mattison Family. She enjoyed any gathering with family or friends and delighted in the love and nurturing of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was in her element when she hosted Grandma’s night for her grandkids and her annual Granny Camp for her great grandkids.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; grand-daughter, Dawn Long Hill; sister, Marjorie Graham; and brothers, Earl Jr. Mattison, Kenneth Mattison, and Harold Mattison.

Dorothy is survived by her children and their spouses, Robert D. Long Jr. (Gerry), Douglas Long (Cindy), Gregory Long (Sheryl) and Denise Long Schmidt (Russell); seven grandchildren, Robert III, Michael, Rachel, Bryan, Christy, Amy, Benjamin; 15 great-grandchildren, Shawn, Robert IV, Mia, Olivia, Quincy, Oscar, Bailey, Alexis, Kylee, Alexys Mary, Alyssa, Connor, Gavin, Evelyn, Mae; and sister-in-law, Sharon Main and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

The family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2022, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N 8th St., Salina, Kansas. Dorothy’s funeral service will be Saturday, May 7th at 10:30 a.m. at the Salina First Church of the Nazarene, 1425 S. Ohio St., Salina, followed by a Celebration of Life Luncheon at the church. A short graveside farewell will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Bennington Cemetery.
