The Abilene High School Basketball Teams opened league play tonight on the road at Concordia. Abilene bounced back nicely with a pair of wins tonight after being swept by McPherson on Tuesday. The Cowgirls used a fourth quarter comeback in their 53-47 victory while the Cowboys snapped a three game losing streak with a 58-38 win.
The Cowgirls looked early on like they were headed towards an easy win as they built leads of 9 points on two separate occasions in the second quarter. The Lady Panthers got back into the game as they ended the first half on an 8-0 run to pull to within 23-22 at halftime. Senior Cydney Bergman scored 6 of those points on that run and finished with 14 points in the second quarter to get her team back in the game. Bergman continued her stellar play with 11 more points in the 3rd to give Concordia a 41-36 lead headed to the fourth. She went on to score 32 points on the night but only 3 in the fourth quarter which allowed the Cowgirls to regain the lead. Abilene would grab the lead for good on a Hannah Willey three point play with 3:02 remaining to go up 46-44.
Abilene was led by Junior Sydney Burton who finished with a career high 22 points. Willey totaled 19 points for the Cowgirls which is just one off her career high. With the win Abilene improved to 4-1, 1-0 on the season.
In the boys game Abilene led just 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but would stretch the lead the rest of the game. The Cowboys lead 29-17 at halftime and 44-29 after the 3rd quarter. In the fourth Abilene would get up by as much as 23 points. It was the 7th straight victory over the Panthers for the Cowboys.
Abilene was led by Senior Tucker Robinson who finished with 14 points. The Cowboys also got a career high 11 points from Junior Preston Boyd. Abilene snapped a three game losing streak with the win and improved to 2-3, 1-0 on the season. Abilene will travel to county rival Chapman Tuesday.
