The Derby Panthers sewed up the 2023 Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League I soccer championship this past Thursday.
The Panthers shutout Campus 5-0 to finish the regular season on an 11-match winning streak, which included all six AVCTL I matches as the Panthers finished the 2023 regular season with a 15-1 overall record and 6-0 in the AVCTL I.
The Panther football team also sewed up the AVCTL I title this past week when they defeated Newton 55-7, to finish the 2023 season with an unblemished 6-0 AVCTL I record.
The city of Maize saw both of its high school’s volleyball teams qualify for next week’s state tournament with Maize High qualifying for the Class 6A state tournament while Maize South qualified for the Class 5A state tournament.
Here is a look at what each AVCTL I school did in football, volleyball and soccer this past week :
CAMPUS
The Colt football team played host to Maize High Friday in the regular season finale and suffered a 48-32 loss. The Colts finished the regular season with a 2-6, 2-4 record and will open play in the Class 6A playoffs this Friday night on the road at Wichita Northwest. … The Lady Colt volleyball team traveled to Newton Tuesday for a non-conference triangular Tuesday evening to close out the regular season and dropped both matches. The Lady Colts lost 2-1 against Newton and 2-1 against Andover. The Lady Colts saw their season come to an end Saturday as they won their sub-state opener 2-0 against Topeka High, but fell 2-1 against Garden City in the sub-state championship to see their season come to an end after a 14-21 campaign. … The Colt soccer team earned its sixth win of the season Monday when they defeated Wichita South 4-0. The Colts, however, were not able to put together a winning streak, as they got shutout 5-0 by Derby Thursday to close the regular season. The Colts will take a 6-10 record into the Class 6A regionals Tuesday against Washburn Rural.
DERBY
The Panther football team wrapped up an undefeated AVCCTL I season Friday night with a 55-7 victory against Newton. The Panthers will open the Class 6A playoffs at home Friday night when they play host to Topeka High. … The Lady Panther volleyball team finished its regular season Tuesday with a 14-22 record as they traveled to Andover Central and split the two matches. The Lady Panthers defeated Arkansas City 2-0 but fell to Andover Central 2-0. The Lady Panthers saw their season come to an end Saturday after a 15-23 campaign. The Lady Panthers defeated Wichita Heights 2-0 in the opening match of the sub-state tournament, but lost 2-0 against Washburn Rural. … The Panther soccer team scored a 4-1 victory against Salina South Tuesday for its 14th victory of the season. The Panthers sealed up the 2023 AVCTL I soccer championship Thursday when they shutout Campus 5-0 to finish the regular season with a 15-1 overall record and finished 6-0 in AVCTL I play. The Panthers will face AVCTL I rival Maize Monday in the opening round of the Class 6A regional tournament.
HUTCHINSON
The Salt Hawk football team closed out the 2023 regular season Friday night with a 34-8 victory against Andover. The Salt Hawks will take their 6-2 record into the opening round of the postseason this Friday night when they play host to Wichita West in the opening round. … The Lady Salt Hawk volleyball team played host to Maize in a single AVCTL I match Tuesday and lost 3-2. The Lady Salt Hawks did not qualify for the postseason this year as they finished the season with a 9-23 record. … The Salt Hawk soccer team fell to 7-7-1 Tuesday when it was defeated 10-0 against Maize South in an AVCTL I showdown. The Salt Hawks closed out the regular season Thursday when they lost 5-1 against Newton. The Salt Hawks will open Class 6A regional play this Tuesday against Bishop Carroll.
MAIZE
Maizie’s Kinsely Jones won the Class 6A girls golf individual championship on Monday and Tuesday, finishing with a 2-day score of 137 to win the individual championship by 3 strokes. … The Eagle football team snapped a 3-game losing streak Friday night with a 48-32 victory against Campus. The win moves the Eagle record to 3-5 as they prepare to open the Class 6A playoffs this Friday night at Goddard. … The Lady Eagle volleyball team traveled to Hutchinson Tuesday for a single AVCTL I match to close out the regular season and came away with a 5-game victory, winning 3-2. The Lady Eagles will take an 18-19 record into the Class 6A state tournament this weekend after winning a Class 6A sub-state tournament after defeating Liberal 2-0 in the opening round and winning the championship with a 2-0 victory against Lawrence Free State High School. … The Eagle soccer team hosted Newton Tuesday in an AVCTL I showdown and came up short, falling 2-0. The Eagles got shutout against Thursday, falling 5-0 against cross-town rival Maize South to finish the regular season with a 4-10-2 overall record. The Eagles will host AVCTL I rival Derby in the opening round of the Class 6A regionals Monday.
MAIZE SOUTH
The Maverick football team scored its 6th victory of the season Friday night when they closed the regular season with a 66-19 victory against Salina South. The Mavericks will open Class 5A playoff play this Friday night when they play host to Bishop Carroll. … The Lady Maverick volleyball team qualified for the Class 5A state tournament this weekend when they won their sub-state tournament with 2-0 victories against Salina South and Valley Center. The Lady Mavericks opened sub-state play with a 2-0 win against Salina South and won the sub-state championship with a 2-0 victory against Valley Center. … The Maverick soccer team improved to 14-1-1 Tuesday with a 10-0 victory against AVCTL I rival Hutchinson. The Mavericks closed the regular season Thursday by shutting out cross-town rival Maize High 5-0 to finish the regular season with a 15-1-1 record and 5-1 in AVCTL I play. The Mavericks will take a 15-1-1 record into the Class 5A regionals Monday when they open by playing host to Arkansas City.
NEWTON
Lady Railer golfer Naomi Koontz fired a 2-day total of 155 to finish in 4th place, individually, in the Class 5A state golf tournament Monday and Tuesday. Koontz finished 11 shots behind the individual champion and 5 strokes in front of the 5th place individual finisher. … The Railer football team suffered its second straight loss Friday night, 55-7 against Derby, to close the regular season with a 3-5 record. The Railers will play at Liberal this Friday night to open the playoffs. … The Lady Railer volleyball team hosted a non-conference triangular against Campus and Andover Tuesday evening and swept both matches, defeating Campus 2-1 and Andover by the same 2-1 count. The Lady Railers saw their season come to an end Saturday after a 22-13 campaign. The Lady Railers opened sub-state play with a 2-1 victory against Kapaun Mt. Carmel but lost 2-0 against Topeka Seaman in the sub-state championship match. … The Railer soccer team traveled to Maize Tuesday for an AVCTL I showdown and kicked its way to a 2-0 victory. The Railers closed out the 2023 regular season Thursday with a 5-1 victory against Hutchinson. The Railers will put their 13-3 record on the line against Andover in the opening of state regionals Monday.
SALINA SOUTH
Lady Cougar golfer Madison Durr placed 9th, individually, Monday and Tuesday in the Class 5A state tournament. Durr finished with a 2-day total of 168, which was 24 strokes behind the individual champion and 1 stroke better than the 10th place individual. … The Cougar football team suffered its 8th loss in 8 regular season attempts Friday night when they closed out the regular season in a 66-19 loss against Maize South. The Cougars will open Class 5A playoffs this Friday night when they play at Kapaun Mt. Carmel. … The Lady Cougar volleyball team saw its 2023 season come to an end Saturday after a 15-22 campaign. The Lady Cougars lost to Maize South 2-0 in the opening round of the sub-state tournament. … The Cougar soccer team suffered its 5th loss of the season Tuesday when it fell 4-1 against Derby, who has only lost once this season. The Cougars closed out the regular season Thursday with a 5-4 victory in overtime against Andover. The Cougars will take an 11-5 record into the opening round of Class 5A regionals this Tuesday when they play host to Topeka West.
