The Abilene High School basketball teams traveled to Hays Friday night and split with Thomas More Prep. In the first game of the night, the Cowgirls lost 44-35. It was just their second loss of the season. In the second game, the Cowboys put together one of their best performances of the season, in a 62-45 victory over the Monarchs.
In the girls game both teams got off to a slow start. Abilene fell behind 9-2 in the first quarter but were able to finish the quarter on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 9, as the two teams entered the second. In the second quarter, it took 3 1/2 minutes for either team to score but despite scoring just 6 points in the quarter, Abilene was able to take a 15-13 lead into the locker room. TMP woke up in the third quarter, the Lady Monarchs put together a 15-0 run to blow the game open. They would lead 32-22 after 3 quarters, and would lead by as many as 18 in the final quarter.
Abilene fell to 10-2 after the loss, while TMP improved to 8-4. The Cowgirls were led by Senior, Hannah Willey, who finished with 16 points. Abilene also got a career high out of Junior, Beth Holmes, who finished the night with 10 points.
The Cowboys put together one of their best offensive performances of the season in their victory over the Monarchs. Abilene led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Cowboys then erupted for 25 second quarter points to take a commanding 42-26 lead into halftime. The Cowboys would extend their lead to 57-32 after 3 quarters, which was their large lead of the game.
The victory was the 10th straight for the Cowboys over the Monarchs in the series. Abilene improved to 9-3 with the victory, TMP slipped to 8-6. The Cowboys were led by Junior, Travis Beetch with 10 points. Abilene was able to play their entire bench and 12 players scored in the victory.
Abilene will return to action Monday night against Concordia. It is a makeup game from Tuesday. Concordia did not play Friday night.
