A Derby high school student is in custody after a handgun was found inside their backpack.

District officials say the move was prompted by a tip that the student may have brought illegal drugs to school.

When the unidentified student was tracked down and their backpack was searched, school security personnel reportedly found an unloaded handgun.

Authorities say no threats were made, and no lock-down of the facility was initiated.

The incident remains under investigation.
