By way of default, the Moundridge Wildcat football team has won the 2023 Heart of America Conference football championship.
The Wildcats are the 2023 HOA football champions as they were the only HOA team to go undefeated in 2023. Moundridge finished 2023 with a 2-0 HOA record.
The Sedgwick Cardinals made that opportunity arise for the Wildcats when they handed Marion its first loss of the season Friday night in the week’s final season. Marion finishes 2023 with a 4-1 HOA record and will take a 7-1 record into the 2023 postseason.
Here is a look at what each HOA school did in football and volleyball this past week :
BENNINGTON
The Bulldog football dropped its fifth game of the regular season Friday night when they closed out the regular season by dropping a 48-28 contest against Clifton-Clyde. The Bulldogs will open postseason play this Friday night when they play at Hoxie. … The Lady Bulldog volleyball team closed out the 2023 regular season Tuesday night when they traveled to Sedgwick and got swept in both matches, falling 2-0 in each match. The Lady Bulldogs saw their 2023 season come to an end Saturday with a 29-8 record. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Republic County in the opening round of sub-state play and defeated Ellis 2-1 in the semifinals but lost 2-0 against Smith Center in the championship match to see their season come to an end.
ELL-SALINE
The Cardinal football team scored its 7th straight victory Friday night when they defeated Lincoln 54-14 to close out the 2023 regular season. The Cardinals will open playoff action Friday night when they play host to Quinter. … The Lady Cardinal volleyball team closed out the regular season Tuesday night by traveling to Ellsworth to play a best of 5 non-conference match and lost all three games, to fall 3-0. The Lady Cardinals saw their 2023 season come to an end Saturday after a 21-16 campaign. The Lady Cardinals defeated Saline County rival, Sacred Heart, 2-1 in the opening round of sub-state play, but fell 2-1 against Ellinwood in the semifinals of the sub-state tournament.
BEREAN ACADEMY
The Warrior soccer team took on Class 6A’s Wichita West Tuesday and kicked their way to 4-1 victory to improve to 7-8 on the season. The Warriors closed out the 2023 regular season Thursday as they suffered a 3-2 defeat against Buhler. The Warriors will play host to McPherson Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 4-1A regionals. … The Lady Warrior volleyball team closed out the regular season Tuesday night by playing host to Remington in an HOA doubleheader and swept both matches, winning the opener 2-0 and completing the sweep winning the nightcap 2-1. The Lady Warriors saw their 2023 season come to an end Saturday when they lost 2-0 against Hillsboro in the opening round of sub-state. The Lady Warriors finished the season with an 11-22 record.
HUTCHINSON TRINITY
The Celtic football team suffered its fifth loss of the season Friday night when they fell 41-6 against Conway Springs to close the 2023 regular season. The Celtics will face Plainville in the opening round of the playoffs Friday night. … The Lady Celtic volleyball team traveled to Sterling Tuesday night for a non-conference triangular against Sterling and Hillsboro and got swept in both matches, falling 2-0 against Sterling and 2-0 against Hillsboro. The Lady Celtics lost 2-0 against HOA rival Inman in the opening round of sub-state Saturday to see their season come to an end. The Lady Celtics finished 2023 with a 4-31 record.
INMAN
The Teuton football team saw its season come to an end Friday night when they lost 12-8 against Medicine Lodge. The Teutons finished the season 2-8 and did not qualify for the Class 2A playoffs. …. The Lady Teuton volleyball team played host to Moundridge Tuesday night for an HOA doubleheader to close the regular season. The Lady Teutons won both matches by the same 2-0 count. The Lady Teutons won the sub-state tournament Saturday to qualify for the Class 2A state tournament with a 31-4 record. The Lady Teutons opened sub-state with a 2-0 victory against HOA rival Hutchinson Trinity, then defeated Garden Plaine 2-0 before winning the sub-state title with a 2-1 victory against Ellinwood.
MARION
The Warrior football team suffered its first loss of the season Friday night when they fell 34-28 against HOA rival Sedgwick. The Warriors will open postseason action this Friday night when they play host to Wabaunsee. … The Lady Warrior volleyball team saw its season come to a close Saturday when they lost 2-0 against Chase County in the opening round of sub-state. The Lady Warriors finished the season with a 19-18 record.
MOUNDRIDGE
The Wildcat football team finished the 2023 regular season with an 8-0 undefeated mark Friday night when they defeated Herington 62-6. The Wildcats finished 2023 with a 2-0 HOA record to claim the HOA football title and will open postseason action Friday night when they play host to Attica/Argonia. … The Lady Wildcat volleyball team traveled to Inman Tuesday to close the regular season and got swept in the HOA doubleheader, falling 2-0 in each match against Inman. The Lady Wildcats saw their 2023 season end Saturday with a 17-20 record after falling 2-0 against Herington in the opening round of sub-state play.
REMINGTON
The Bronco football team earned its second win of the season Friday night when they defeated Belle Plaine 49-25. The Broncos will open postseason play Friday night at Valley Heights. … The Lady Bronco volleyball team closed out the 2023 regular season Tuesday night playing an HOA doubleheader at Berean Academy and got swept. The Lady Broncos lost the opener 2-0 and fell in the nightcap 2-1. The Lady Broncos ended the 2023 season after a 15-21 campaign Saturday when they were defeated by HOA rival Sedgwick in the opening round of sub-state play.
SEDGWICK
The Cardinal football team scored its 5th straight victory Friday night when they handed HOA rival Marion its first loss of the season, 34-28. The Cardinals will open postseason play Friday night when they play host to Sacred Heart. … The Lady Cardinal volleyball team closed out the 2023 regular season Tuesday night by hosting Bennington in an HOA doubleheader and sweeping both matches, winning each match by a 2-0 count. The Lady Cardinals finished the regular season with a 34-1 overall record and finished 17-1 in HOA play.
STERLING
The Black Bear football team completed the 2023 regular season Friday night with a 27-22 victory against Ellinwood. The Black Bears will open the playoffs Friday night when they play at Ellis. … The Lady Black Bear volleyball team played host to Hillsboro and Hutchinson Trinity Tuesday night in a non-conference triangular and split the two matches, defeating Hutchinson Trinity 2-0 but falling 2-0 against Hillsboro. The Lady Black Bears saw their 2023 season come to an end Saturday after falling 2-0 against Ellinwood in the opening round of sub-state play.
