Kansas State Board of Education members are pondering how much additional funding for public schools they’ll seek next year.

The agenda for the board’s meeting Tuesday includes a discussion of boosting general state aid and money for professional development and school lunch programs during the fiscal year that starts in July 2014.

One proposal would raise the state’s base aid to school districts by $640 per student, or by almost 17 percent. The current figure for the next fiscal year is $3,852 per student.

The board’s budget recommendations would go to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. The board would lobby legislators once lawmakers open their next annual session in January.

A lawsuit over education funding is pending before the Kansas Supreme Court, with arguments set for October.
