Arlo R. Gruenthal, 95, Salina, died January 3, 2019 at the Bethany Home, Lindsborg. Arlo was born April 7, 1923 in Glasco, Ks. where he grew up on the farm attending St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Glasco. He graduated from Brown Mackie College, Salina. He and his brother, Albert were business partners, owning and operating Tasty Freeze ice cream store in Salina and as mail transportation contractors, serving the US Mail to many post offices daily for 45 years. He also clerked many auctions over the years. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salina for 75 years where he sang in the church Senior Choir, and met and married his wife Louise Carr with whom he sang many duets. He was a church council member 12 years; chaired worship and music committees and was active in the Mr. and Mrs. Club. At Bethany College, Lindsborg, he sang in the 300 voice chorus for the Messiah and St. Matthew’s Passion for 40 years.
Arlo played trumpet and bass horn and was in the Salina Municipal Band. He served as secretary of the board of directors for the Bethany Home for 13 years and had served as the Kansas State President of the Star Route Mail Contractors Association.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Louise. Arlo is survived by his son, Mark A. Gruenthal, Residence 600, Salina.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salina. Burial will be in the Roselawn Cemetery, Salina. Memorials are suggested to the church or Hospice of Salina.
