Arvid Emanuel Leroy Flewelling

Arvid Emanuel Leroy Flewelling was born December 3, 1931, to Julia (Swan) and Leroy Flewelling 5 ½ miles south of Jamestown, Kansas. He entered first grade in September 1936, District #64, ½ mile south of his home. In 1941, he moved with his family to a small farm adjoining the southeast edge of Jamestown. He attended Jamestown schools after the 4th grade and played high school football his sophomore year as quarterback and senior year as center. He played in the band, starting with tuba and then trombone.
After graduation, he started farming with his father until 1952 when he was drafted into the army. He served two years in the counter intelligence corps as an intelligence analyst stationed in Minneapolis, MN. He was honorably discharged in 1954 as corporal. While in Minneapolis, he also sang in the choir.

Arvid went back to farming with his father after his discharge from the army. He took flying lessons on a Cessna 150 and received his pilot’s license at Beloit Airport. He was a member of the Belleville Flying Club until 1980. His pilot’s license allowed him to more easily visit his future wife, Alice, who lived 100 miles south of Jamestown in Hutchinson, Kansas. They were married on February 13, 1971. In late 2012, Arvid and Alice moved from Kansas to Orlando, Florida to be close to their sons and grandchildren.

Arvid was active in the community and church throughout his life. He formed the Benefit Fire District #1 after experiencing a fire without fire protection. When his father became disabled, he worked with members of the community to start the Cheyenne Lodge Nursing Home in Jamestown. Arvid began going to church at the age of 13, attended confirmation class, and Luther League. He was an active member of the Ada Lutheran Church in rural Courtland, Kansas.

Surviving are his wife, Alice and two sons Matthew and Mark, daughter-in-law Kristina, and grandsons Evan and Koen.

Arvid was preceded in death by his parents Julia and Leroy, and still-born sister, Mary.
