Bernard Holm Johnson, of Salina, died peacefully Sunday evening, Aug. 18, 2019, at Eaglecrest Retirement Community. Bernie was 89. He was born April 15, 1930, in Nickerson, Kan., to Erick and Alice Johnson, the youngest of three children.
He graduated from Nickerson High School in 1948 and attended Hutchison Community College. On Jan. 8, 1949, Bernie married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Georgia Carole Hamilton.
Bernie and Carole moved to Salina in 1950 where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Their first child, daughter, Lynn Johnson Camren was born in 1949, followed by son, Max David Johnson in 1954, and Eric Hamilton Johnson in 1959. Bernie retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1990.
Bernie was gregarious, intelligent and full of life. He loved to play golf, read, watch sports and play cards.
His parents; his brother, Bill Johnson; and his wife, Carole preceded Bernie in death.
His surviving loving family will miss him, including his brother, Bruce Johnson; daughter, Lynn and son-in-law Ron Camren; son, Max and daughter-in-law Debbie Davis-Johnson; son, Eric and daughter-in-law Susan R. Johnson; grandchildren, Aaron Camren, Danny Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Courtney Richards, Hannah Johnson, Dan Stewart, David Stewart, Sam Stewart and Guinevere Davis; and great-grandchildren, Josh Camren, Dylan Camren, Harrison Richards and Mya Quinones.

After a private burial at Christ Cathedral, the family welcomes friends to celebrate Bernie’s life from 3-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Blue Sky Brewery.
