David J. Atkinson, 73, died Jan. 6, 2020, at his Saline County home, surrounded by loving family and friends. He was born Sept. 2, 1947, in Hutchinson, the son of Ethel and John Atkinson. The youngest of 10 children, he graduated Hutchinson High School in 1964. He married Betty Brown in Plevna on June 21, 1969, on the “longest day of the year,” he often quipped. David loved hunting, fishing, coaching, making cinnamon rolls and bierocks with Betty, making people laugh, and spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed a 45-year career as a pressman for the Hutchinson News and Salina Journal, retiring in 2012 as the Journal’s production manager. Dave and Betty welcomed four children and have six grandchildren.
Dave is survived by his wife, Betty Atkinson; daughters, Madonna Anglin, Melissa Ingram, both of Salina, and Marcella Scheck, of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Duncan Anglin, Connor Anglin, Meleia Ingram, Luke Ingram, Ryan Scheck and Derek Scheck.
He was preceded in death by Meleia Lynn Atkinson, parents and siblings. David was devoted to many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
