Donald M. Hughes, passed away on September 4, 2024 at the age of 95. He was born on August 9, 1929 to Keith and Buelah (Smith) Hughes on a farm in Saline County. He has lived in Salina or Saline County all his life. Don served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea for the majority of his service. He married his wife, Mae Weis, on May 24, 1959. Don became a barber, practicing for several years before becoming a full-time farmer.
Over the years, he had many hobbies such as learning to ski at the age of 50, a lifetime of hunting, traveling, building a one room cabin, giving horse and buggy rides and was even an extra in a movie utilizing his horse and buggy. At an early age, he followed in the footsteps of his dad and taught himself to play guitar. Don was honored to have given his grandsons’ their first traditional haircuts. He also enjoyed trips to the casinos and the day before he became ill, had traveled to the casino in Wichita.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and his sisters. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mae; his children: daughter, Barb Powell (Chuck) of Salina; sons, Clint Hughes (Donella) of Salina, and Tom Hughes (Mike) of Tulsa; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has been chosen. An informal gathering of family and friends will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Bring your lawn chair, your favorite beverage of choice, and your favorite memories of your time with Don.
