Dorothy Jeanne (Ballinger) Leicht, 93, formally of McPherson, Kansas passed away Thursday, August 8, 2019 in Prescott, Arizona.
Dorothy was born on March 27, 1926 in Harvey, North Dakota the only child of Jack and Hattie (Kaftan) Ballinger.
The family moved to Lodi, California when Dorothy was eleven years old.
Dorothy attended schools in Lodi and graduated from Lodi High School in 1944. She then attended the University of Pacific in Stockton, California and graduated in 1948 with her teaching degree.
A week after graduating from college, she married Howard Leicht.
She began her teaching career that fall, teaching third grade for three years until a family was started. In 1962 Howard was transferred to Fullerton, California where the family resided.
Dorothy continued substitute teaching until her retirement. In 2000 Howard and Dorothy moved to McPherson, Kansas to live near family.
She was an avid reader and TV sports watcher; she didn’t miss watching a game of her beloved Giants.
Dorothy also enjoyed cooking, baking, and working in the yard. She volunteered at Trash to Treasure with her dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and grandson, Jacob, who passed away in Afghanistan.
Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Richard Leicht and his wife Susie, of McPherson, Kansas, Dr. Craig Leicht and his wife Shirly, of Prescott, Arizona and James Leicht and his wife Shelley, of Greenville, North Carolina. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Glidden-Ediger Chapel in McPherson, Kansas.
Burial will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
