Douglas Kirk Schwan was born in Davenport, Iowa on April 5, 1949 to Al and Doris Schwan. He went to meet his Lord and Savior on December 31, 2024, in Salina, Kansas. After graduating from Marshall Senior High School in Marshall, MN, Doug enlisted in the Navy on June 5, 1967 and was honorably discharged on June 4, 1973. After basic training at the Naval Base in San Diego, CA, Doug served on the USS Hull destroyer during the Vietnam War. He and his shipmates received a Certificate of Appreciation for their service, which was signed by President Richard Nixon. Doug rarely spoke of his Vietnam experience as he witnessed the devastating effects of war.

Doug was proud of his service to St. Mark Church over the years, participating in community canvassing, ushering, church maintenance, Little Lions Preschool and Bible study. He loved the Lord and had a solid faith that allowed him to know with confidence that he was saved and would be with Jesus in heaven at the time of his death.

After his Navy service, Doug worked as a cook in Dodge City, then at Elkan Auto Manufacturing plant in Ellsworth and finally 33 years at the Tony’s Pizza plant in Salina, KS. He took pride in his on-time and consistent work performance.

Doug loved to watch the various Salina softball teams on cool summer nights. He also enjoyed the many movies and documentaries he had in his extensive collection.

Doug is survived by four brothers: Bruce in Kennewick, WA; Mike in Walnut Creek, CA; Kerry in Salina, KS and Mel in Southern Pines, NC.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Al and Doris Schwan.

Viewing of the casket will take place at Roselawn Memorial Heights Chapel on Friday, January 24th from 5 – 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at Saint Mark Lutheran Church at 2349 South Ohio Street, Salina, Kansas on Saturday, January 25th at 11 am. He will be buried at the Roselawn Cemetery next to his parents.
