Edith Marie Herbin, formerly of Jamestown, KS, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at the age of 98 at Stormont Vail Health Center, Topeka, KS. She was born on March 29, 1926, in Marysville, KS, to Frank and Josepha (Dwerlkotte) Nordhus and raised on a farm near Marysville.
Edith attended St. Gregory’s Catholic School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1943. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, after which she returned to Marysville to join the workforce. She was employed by the Citizen State Bank and the Marysville Mutual Insurance Company. In 1948, she was united in marriage with Armin John Herbin at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. They were married for 73 years.
Edith was a woman of deep faith and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Jamestown where she served on the Altar Society for many years. She was active in her community, serving on the board of directors of The Jamestown State Bank, the library board, organizing the summer reading program, and helping with the Jamestown Community Pride Program.
In addition to her community involvement, Edith was a very talented and creative woman, a master seamstress, quilter, gardener, baker and avid reader.
In time, Edith and John attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Concordia. They eventually moved to Presbyterian Manor in Topeka where Edith especially cherished corresponding with her children and grandchildren through e-mail.
She recently established an endowed scholarship for the benefit of the College of Nursing at Benedictine College in Atchison, drawing inspiration from the wonderful nursing care she has received from graduates of the school.
Edith is survived by her brother, Jerry Nordhus of Shawnee, KS; her son, John F Herbin, Jamestown, KS; daughters Jean (Fred) Meis, Minden, NE; Mary (John) Horan, Chicago, IL; Ann (Mike) Powell, Topeka, KS; and Margi (Duane) Puckett, Lincoln, NE; 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and siblings Norbert Nordhus, Victor Nordhus, Francis Nordhus, Betty Dam, and James Nordhus.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 20, 2025 from 1-5 pm at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, KS. A rosary will be prayed on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia, KS with Fr. Joseph Kieffer officiating. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2:00 pm. A luncheon will follow the mass and then the burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Jamestown, Kansas.
