Floyd “Shorty” Bernhardt, 93, of Salina, went to be with Jesus on Saturday, May 9, 2020. Born February 24, 1927 in Tampa, KS to Jacob and Mollie Bernhardt. He married the love of his life, Wanda Monasmith on December 2, 1951, she preceded him in death on January 9, 2013.
Floyd served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946. He joined the Salina Fire Department in 1951 and retired in 1980 after 29 years of service. Upon retirement he started Bernhardt Construction and for 24 years built and remodeled over 30 homes around the Salina area and built homes for his children in the towns they lived. During this time, he worked part-time at the Salina Auto auction for 37 years. He made many lifelong friendships with his fellow firemen, fellow contractors, sub-contractors, real estate agents, John and the staff and dealers at the Salina Auto Auction, as well as all the men and women who met at the McDonalds on Ohio for coffee each morning. The running joke was, if you were out and about with Floyd, it was not if he would run into someone, he knew but how many. He treasured and appreciated all the friendships.
