Jack L. Martin, 80, of Salina, Kansas passed away peacefully Saturday, June 2, 2018. He was born June 20, 1937 to the late John and Edith Martin in Hugoton, Kansas. He attended High School in Hutchinson, Kansas and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Harding on December 31, 1956. Jack was a long-time grocer and met his wife-to-be at the local Safeway while working as a Produce Manager. He was the General Manager of Mr. D’s IGA in Salina, Kansas in the mid 60’s and later became the proud owner in the early 70’s changing the name to Jack’s IGA. While planning their retirement, Jack and Mary Ann built their dream home, a small cabin in the mountains of SW Colorado where they lived for close to 20 years.
Jack’s passions in life included keeping a meticulously manicured lawn, maintaining his vehicles and the family cabin, John Wayne movies, Louis L’Amour novels and his dog, Thor. He was baptized in the Kiamichi River in SW Oklahoma while at a Christian Men’s retreat.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, his daughters, Jackie (Larry) Stanton of Wichita, KS, Tammy (J.J.) O’Connor of Smolan, KS, Annette (Tim) Ochs of Salina, KS, his son, Randy (Jennifer) Martin of Tallahassee, FL, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2018, 11:00 am at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, KS. The service will be followed by a luncheon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salina Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be made at www.ryanmortuary.com.
