Joan Simmons passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 20, 2022, at the age of 95. She was born on April 9, 1926, to Lone and Helen Redding, farmers residing in Minneola, Kansas, where she had three brothers. She graduated from Minneola High School in 1944 before attending Dodge City CC.
After WWII she married Edward Simmons of Ashland and moved to Salina where they enrolled in Kansas Wesleyan University. After graduating, Ed attended the UMKC College of Dentistry in Kansas City where Joan worked as the executive assistant for Nat Milgram, founder of Milgram’s Food Stores.
Following Ed’s graduation from dental school Joan and Ed moved back to Salina, opened a dental practice, where Joan worked as his first dental assistant. Joan was married to Ed for 62 years before his passing in 2008.
Joan was an avid bridge player, loved to read and spend time gardening. Ed and Joan spent many summers in Suttons Bay, Michigan enjoying cooler weather and playing golf. She was an active member of Helianthus (a federated women’s club), the Salina Charities League, and PEO DL Chapter. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church hospital visitation team, and the Crusaders Sunday School class.
Joan is survived by 3 children; son, Rick, of Salina; daughter, Tanya (Joe Krsnich) of Overland Park; son, Randy (Traci) of Stilwell; 4 grandchildren; Lou (Anna Krsnich) of Oakland, California; Jimmy Krsnich of Overland Park; Korri Simmons of Stilwell; Kodi Simmons of Stilwell; and 1 great granddaughter, Edith Krsnich.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on April 9th at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Salina at the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center, or First United Methodist Church, Salina. Ryan Mortuary, Salina, is in charge of arrangements.
