Larry Elwin Plaggerman, 87, of Salina, passed away Monday, March 4, 2024. He was born on June 22, 1936 to Albert and Gladys Plaggerman in Sandstone, MN. Larry graduated from Sandstone High School in 1954 and was the class president. He was working in Washington State and was drafted by the Army in 1959 and served at Fort Riley until 1961. Larry was president of Beneficial Finance for many years. In 1972, he opened two car lots, Larry’s Auto Sales, in Junction City. He was elected by the City Commission in 1979 to 1985, served as Mayor in 1981 and 1983. He was also a member of the Optimist Club.
Larry and Cleo Ann Rassette were married January 20, 1973 at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, Kansas. In 2006, the moved to Salina and he was elected as an Elder, at Trinity Lutheran Church. He served Meals on Wheels since 2007. Larry enjoyed “Golf with Seniors” supporting Kansas State Wildcats, Kansas City Royals and his local teams. His last request to Cleo was he wanted to visit Sandstone to try and remember certain memories, she took him in October 2023.
He is survived by his wife Cleo, of the home; daughters, Shonna (Larry) Nely, of Abilene and Sheila (Kevin) Shaw, of Ottawa; grandchildren, Danielle (Scottie) Ridder, of Abilene, Marshall (Katie) Nely, of Wichita, Sage (Stephanie) Shaw, and Dalton Shaw, all of Ottawa; great-grandchildren, Kylen, McKenna and Locklynn Ridder, Christian Nely, and Liam Shaw; step-great grandchildren, Trey and Brooke Reisman; sister, Karen (Jerry) Nelson, of Sandstone, MN and sister in law, Mavis Plaggerman, Spokane, IA.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Clarice (Harold) Sawatzke; brother, Marvin Plaggerman.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
