Michael Royce Guernsey, born on April 21,1953, in Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully early Friday morning at his home on June 2, 2023. He was a 1971 graduate of Salina Central and later graduated from Kansas State University in 1977.
Mike spent most of his adult life in the hospitality business, but he is best known as the owner/operator of the legendary Bahama Mama. Everyone of that era had stories about their time with Mike. It’s safe to say that the 80’s in Salina would not have been the same without this classic hangout.
It would be hard to find someone that could match his knowledge and love of classic rock n roll. He had an extensive library of music, concert posters, and videos. He enjoyed inviting over friends to sit in the Captain’s Chair watching endless hours of concert footage at high decibel levels. Even until the end, he could name everyone on stage.
Mike was an original member of the Rusty Blades and was active in the live music scene. His fondest memory near the end was when a local group of musicians reunited with Mike at the drums for a gig at the Paramount. Thanks to Loren Banninger for organizing this group and to the band members for a great night of entertainment.
He had a passion for his beloved Red Sox, the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, and for his afternoon time playing pitch.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Russell Guernsey and Pattye (Royse) Guernsey.
A special thanks to Christina and Crystal and the staff at Gentiva Hospice for all their care and assistance these last few months. His group of loyal friends couldn’t have managed without them.
A Celebration of Life will be planned at a future date. Memorials can be made to the Stiefel Theatre’s Mike Finnegan School of Music.
