Norma Jean Oborg, 87 years of age, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, in Springdale, AR. She was born on February 6, 1936, in Salina, KS, to Alvin and Janett Weddle. Norma graduated from Salina High School in 1954. She worked for Salina Chamber of Commerce until 1956 when she was joined in matrimony to Virgil “Pete” Oborg. They made their home in Smolan, KS where she and Pete raised their two daughters, Marty, and Shelley. After staying home several years, she went to work for John Carlin helping him with various administrative tasks at Carlin Farms while he occupied a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives until he became the 40th Governor of Kansas. She later worked for a law office in Lindsborg and then in 1982 began working for USD 400 Central office as the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools where she retired in 2000 after 18 years of service. After Pete’s death in 2020, she moved to Springdale, AR, where she spent the past three years enjoying time with her youngest sister, Mary Ann.
Norma enjoyed working with youth in the Smoky View 4-H club for many years, sharing her craft and sewing skills, and was an active member of Salemsborg Lutheran Church. Her pride and joy were her girls and grandkids and she spent many hours traveling to watch volleyball, basketball, track, soccer, and softball to support them. Norma was a proud farmer’s wife and enjoyed cooking and delivering meals to the field.
Norma is survived by her two daughters, Marty (Scott) Whitaker of Carrollton, TX, and Shelley (Steve) Lierz of Overland Park, KS; her 4 grandchildren, Britta Whitaker and McKenna Whitaker of Dallas, TX, Brady Lierz of Little Rock, AR, and Sydney Lierz of Overland Park, Mary Ann (John) Paxson of Springdale, AR; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil “Pete” Oborg; sister, Donna Swartz; and nephew, Mike Paxson.
Services will be at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, 3831 West Salemsborg Road, Smolan, KS, on Saturday, July 15, 2023. The family will receive visitors at 1:30 with a funeral service at 2:30 pm. A private family burial will follow. The family will then join guests for coffee and desserts.
