Russell Dean Carter Sr., of Salina, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019. He was born on January 20, 1935 in Salina to James Larkin and Edna (Thorne) Carter, one of 13 children.
Russell was a USMC combat veteran, serving in Korea, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He loved to fish and hike and enjoyed listening to classical music. He loved traveling and took his children to most of the US National Parks. His sense of humor and his sayings still bring a smile to everyone’s face.
Russell is survived by: his children, Deborah Hensley, Albuquerque, NM, Russell Jr., Salina, Kathleen A. Bernard, Seattle, WA, Mary E. Hill, Marquette, Colleen L. Fagan, Salina, Samuel L. Carter, North Richland Hills, TX, Arlene K. Carter, Fort Worth, TX, Heather L. Banks, Seattle, WA, John P. Carter, Salina, Michael F. Carter, Salina, and Matthew A. Carter, Plainville; siblings, Barbara Nelson, OK, Nancy Gluth, AK, and Jerry Carter, KS; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by: his parents; son, Kevin L. Carter; and siblings, Jean Henley, James L. Carter, Max L. Carter, Betty Bryant, Sterling I. Carter, Wanda Berner, Stanley M. Carter, Martha M. Carter and Patricia Shea.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Ft. Riley Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, KS, 66503, with a reception celebration of life to follow at 3:30 p.m. at Salina VFW Post 1432, 1108 W Crawford St.
