Virginia I. Hedlund Mitchell, 98, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 11:08 p.m., Saturday, June 8th, 2019 peacefully, at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas.
Virginia was born in McPherson, Kansas on February 22, 1921, a daughter of Inez Elvira (Johnson) and Victor Waldemar Hedlund.
Virginia attended and graduated from the New Gottland #75 grade school, rural McPherson, and attended and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1939. She then attended one year of college at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas where she received her Teaching Certificate.
Virginia I. Hedlund was united in marriage to Don Murray Mitchell on June 18, 1944 at New Gottland, Kansas. The young couple established their first home southwest of Town. He died on February 20, 2005.
She was a member of McPherson Church of Christ McPherson, KS.
Virginia was a legal secretary for several attorneys in town and for McPherson County Abstract Company with 65+ dedicated years with a majority of those years working for McPherson County Abstract Company.
She was a member of the Groveland Homemakers EHU. Virginia enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family, being a part of her church family, and sharing her talents and hospitality with everyone.
She is survived by her children, Ret. Col. Alan M. Mitchell and his wife Cathy, of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Greg E. Mitchell, of McPherson, Kansas, and Donna KM Vincent and husband Greg Vincent, of McPherson, Kansas; her sister, Betty E. Quarnstrom and husband Carl, of Topeka, Kansas; her eight grandchildren, Julie Mitchell, Ron Mitchell (Suzy), Rick Stratton (Sue-Finn), Angela Deards (Dave), Kim Johnson (Jason), Jodi Morrissey (Jason), Rebecca Vincent, David Vincent (Michelle); her 15 great-grandchildren, Keeley Greene (Nate), Jeremy Johnson, Christopher Stratton, Jimmy Stratton, Abigail Mitchell, Isabella Mitchell, Thomas Mitchell, Elizabeth Deards, Alexandria Deards, Ryan Morrissey, Catelynn Morrissey, Weston Morrissey, Owen Giles, Aria Vincent, and Lyla Vincent, her 2 great-great-granddaughters, Kileigh White and Kodi Greene; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; her grandson John Mitchell; her brothers, Arnold, Leonard, Carl and Virgil Hedlund; her sisters, Alice Burkholder and twin Vivian Osborn; and daughter-in-law, Jonell Mitchell.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Glidden – Ediger Chapel.
Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, June, 14, at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
Memorial service will be held at McPherson Church of Christ, McPherson, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 14th, with Minister, Glen Elliott officiating.
