The Salina Spikes 14u baseball team came away with a USSSA “AAA” State Championship over the weekend. The tournament was played at the Mid-America Sports Complex in Shawnee.
The Spikes swept through pool play with wins over the Augusta Bullets, Wichita Select, and the Black Dragons, to set themselves up nicely in the bracket round.
A 10-0 victory in the quarterfinal round over the Olathe Ravens kept the momentum rolling into the semifinals. That semifinal round against Mac N Seitz – Fimmen provided plenty of heroics, as a walk-off triple from Parker Graves cleared the bases and sent the Spikes to the Championship.
An early lead helped the Salina Spikes defeat Strikezone 6-2 for the title.
The offensive firepower by was led by Bodie Rodriguez, Keaton Smith, Chance Hogan, and Ty Heitschmidt, all driving in runs in the first 2 innings.
Parker Graves was on the hill for the Salina Spikes. He went two innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out one and walking zero. Tiernan Ptacek went 5 innings, allowing one run on 6 hits, striking out two and walking zero.
The Spikes flashed leather across the diamond in the Championship game to secure the victory.
The Spikes scattered nine hits in the game. Hogan and Smith each had multiple hits for the boys in blue. Hogan went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Salina Spikes.
