Vehicle Thief Arrested

The man wanted for stealing numerous vehicles in Saline Co. has been arrested.

Sheriff Glen Kochanowski tells KSAL news that William Avise, 29, of Gypsum was arrested in Wichita on May 6th after items that were in the 2007 Chevolet Silverado he stole from a field in Assaria were recovered at a car dealership.

At 7pm on May 2nd the suspect first stole a 2011 silver Suburu Legacy from the 700 block of Highland. Salina Police were dispatched after the owner of the vehicle had her purse and keys stolen from inside her home while she was outside. The vehicle was later found at Long McArthur Ford undamaged.

Officers were then sent to Long McArthur Ford after the suspect entered the business and left. Employees say the man entered acting nervous. It was then discovered that the keys to a 2013 Lincoln MKS rental vehicle were stolen. It was later recovered along old 81 highway and Sundgren Road.

Before abandoning the Lincoln MKS, the suspect attempted to steal two other vehicles in the town of Assaria. At 750pm the suspect entered a home in the 200 block of South Fairchild. An owner of the home found him going through her purse. With keys in hand the man fled the home, attempted to steal the vehicle, but eventually gave the keys back to owner after she pursued him.

After fleeing that residence he came to a home in the 400 block of East Kansas. At 8pm while the owner of the home was working in his yard, the suspect walked up the driveway of the home, went into the garage and entered the victims vehicle. When the homeowner approached the vehicle, which had its keys in it, the suspect eventually exited and left.

From there he would approach the 800 block of East Sundgren Road where he left the Lincoln MKS in a field, and stole a grey 2007 Chevrolet Silverado belonging to the Monsanto Company of Halstead, KS. The vehicle, valued at $20,000 left the area going southbound on Highway 81 containing the victims wallet, laptop and iPad.

Between April 23-29th Avise is also accused of being involved in a domestic disturbance with a Gypsum woman. She alleges she was staying with him between that time and accuses Avise of beating her. On April 29 she was able to get away from the suspect and reported being abused to the sheriffs office.

Avise faces numerous charges including two counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of theft, robbery, criminal threat, domestic battery, criminal restraint, kidnapping and intimidation of a witness.
